In the poem â€Å"The Poetry Lesson† by Don Maclennan an ironic mood emerges. The poem is about an English poetry lecturer. He expresses his views and feelings on his lessons, how he might have impacted on the lives, altered the views and the challenges he has given his students. He states what he expects from his students. It is interesting to note that Don Maclennan is in fact a South African English poetry lecturer. I thus assume that this poem is a reflection on how he views himself and his students. I intend to give a detailed analysis of the poem, by defining the type of irony that occurs in the poem and commenting on the use of irony and the nature of the poems commentary on itself. I will give my interpretation of each stanza of the†¦show more content†¦10). This shows the irony that the teacher who should know most things about his/her subject knows very little. The reader is made to ponder about whether he is ignorant or just feigning it. In stanza one we are introduced to the teacher. He seems to be an unhappy person as he speaks of sliding â€Å"into depression† (l. 1). We hear of him listening to â€Å"the redwing starlings in the tree† (l. 3) and the impression that he longs for someone to hear him is given as he says, â€Å"I need someone to hear my confessions† (l. 4). The word confessions could imply that he has something bearing down of him that he longs to share with others. At this point in the poem it is not clear that the speaker is a lecturer, I assumed he was a student who would be describing a poetry lecture. The irony here is the idea that the lecturer was a student. The lecturer stands by and watches his students walking into class. Stanza one has provided the reader with an idea of where the poem is set and a brief introduction to the poet and how he feels. In stanza two the poet describes himself in detail as his students might see him and we see how he sees his students. The poet states that he brings his â€Å"emptiness inside† (l. 10) the lecture hall and refers to his students as being the knowledgeable ones. The nineteen twenties in American history was as important maybe if not the most important era of American past time. Reasons for this are because at the turn of the century and into the twenties there were many things being discovered, new inventions, and new laws to being constructed for a developing nation. Along with this many Americans were moving to more urban areas in search of not only jobs but a better way of life due to the industrial factories. The invention of not only the automobile but the first moving assembly line created a huge market for the developing American economy. This created more jobs and it was evident with the age of imperialism that the United States was on the way to being a world power. However during the early 1900’s the part of history that seems to be overlooked is that of the food and meat packing industry. In an eye opening novel entitled The Jungle by Upton Sinclair, the author tells a story in which exposes the gut wrenching and shocking facts of what actually goes on in these food processing and meat packing factories in an urban Chicago during the early 1900s. Sinclair does a wonderful job at exposing what actually happened behind these factory doors and informs the reader of the unsanitary process in which animals were transformed into meat products. Answer: Main facts of the case There are four directors of Chaser ltd. The company is in the business of wine bottling. Competition has increased in this field so they are planning to go into a new business. Antony, one of the director met with his old friend during the vacation namely Wayne. He was the director of Westpool Pty Ltd. This company was in the business of producing tidal energy. Antony thought that this business was profitable and wished to expand Chaser Ltd into this business. For this he invited Wayne to explain the project to other directors. Directors were convinced and investment was approved for by them. They invested $20 million. After investment they came to know that production of tidal energy requires natural conditions which were absent in the Great Barrier Reef. The project failed. Antony was the major shareholder of Westpool Ltd Analysis and Judgements Section 180 Care and Diligence civil obligation only This is one of the duties of the director. A director is required to conduct the affairs of the business in diligent manner. He or she should conduct the business as if all the assets of the company belong to him or her. He should use the rights in the best interest of the company and should obey all the duties. The decision regarding the business venture should be taken in good faith. He did not disclose the fact when introducing Wayne to all the directors. Further Wayne somewhere knew that that Australia is not a perfect location for tidal energy business. So it was a malicious attempt to defraud the company. In case if this fact was known to Antony than he is also liable for negligence in performing his duties. The other director should have done a feasibility analysis. They should not have relied on the theoretical facts stated by Wayne in the presentation. Wayne has a good convincing power but the directors should be practical enough. They should have investigated the matter in depth Conclusion This case has certain characteristics of the case Australian Securities and Investments Commission v Fortescue Metals Group Ltd (FMG). We can conclude that Wayne has cheated the company and has fooled the directors so he is liable to repay $20 million and compensate the company for the loss suffered during the project. In case if it is found that Antony had known the fact from the beginning that the project was not feasible then even he is liable for civil penalty under section 1371E. The other three directors have not acted in a bonafide manner so even they are held responsible for negligence of their duty. Hence all the directors along with Wayne are required to compensate the company.
